A new mosquito species and three African mosquito-borne diseases have recently been identified in Germany. With the immigrated Asian rock pool mosquito (Ochlerotatus japonicus), Germany now lists 48 different species of mosquitoes. Furthermore, the Sindbis-, Batai-, and Usutu viruses have been identified in different mosquitos. These Africa and Asia-based viruses can cause fever and influenza-like symptoms. Owing to the medical surroundings in Germany however, epidemic situations are most unlikely. Experts name Globalization and change of climate as the main reasons for the increasing number of tropical insects that settle and survive in Germany.

Recent publications and numerous reports highlight the fact that the number of infections with Dengue fever has doubled in the past 10 years. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 2.5 billion people in 100 countries are at risk; with a constantly increasing tendency.
Dengue fever is an acute febrile disease, spread by infected female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Symptoms range from flu-like ones, to high fever with severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and rash. There are no specific antiviral medicines for Dengue. At present, the only method of controlling or preventing dengue virus transmission is to combat the vector mosquitoes.
In order to avoid mosquito bites, wear shoes, socks, long trousers and shirts; especially when you are outside and use insecticides, mosquito nets and repellents.

In cooperation with Merck, Gyllentorget launches its first insect repellent product, suitable for safe and caring protection against insect bites.
The spray using the active ingredient IR3535 is an effective alternative to DEET and is a suitable product for use on children 12 months and older.
